Golf
in the South Strand - Pawley's Island
Further south still is Pawley's Island
home to 3 of the Top Players Choice Awards
Courses as ranked by the Myrtle Beach Golf Association. These
are Caledonia Golf and Fish Club, Heritage Club and True Blue
Plantation.
Caledonia Golf and Fish Club was designed
by Mike Strantz and was one of his first designs after honing
his craft under the tutorage of Tom Fazio. Set on a historic
rice plantation Caledonia is not the typical plantation style
course design. "What they wanted to do was preserve as
much natural beauty as possible and move very little dirt,"
Seganti (Caledonia Golf Pro) says. "That was the only
instruction they gave Mike." "Caledonia is the lone
exception to Srantz's in-your-face design philosophy."
Heritage Club is a magnificent course
covered with over 600 acres of giant magnolias, 300 year old
oaks and fresh water lakes and marshes, which have been transformed
into a course to rival the finest in the world. Golf Digest
ranked Heritage among the "50 best courses in America"
and spacious fairways, large greens along with the surrounding
stands of crepe myrtle, camellias and azaleas make it one
of the most beautiful. "Heavily landscaped areas of wildflowers
and flowering shrubs will maintain the beauty of this historical
setting for generations to come."
True Blue opened in 1998 and is more
of a challenge than the smaller Caledonia course. It has gone
through several makeovers in recent years and toned down to
be enjoyable to the more average golfer. Golf Digest rated
True Blue #13 in 2001 as one of the 25 top courses in South
Carolina.
